Was it the Super Nintendo, or the original PlayStation generation? Both were incredible with some of the best games ever made. Now a lot of these games, of course, were Final Fantasy related. They are amazing, but what about the unsung heroes of this generation? Let's take a look at some of those hidden gems right now. Why bring up that title? The two were developed at the same time. Too bad the rights are tied up with Square Enix for those teams to make proper sequels.
Brave Fencer Musashi has nothing to do with that, but it definitely has the same vibe. There is a whacky army of ninjas and monsters after this spunky little samurai in a kingdom where a lot of things are named after food. What is this Dragon Ball? It did get one sequel, Musashi Legend on PS2, but that was the end for this short-lived series. Crazy fact, no? It was such an ambitious title for its time just like the former game.
It was a darker, medieval dungeon crawler with religious and political undertones. It was also brutally difficult. It is not Dark Souls challenging, but it definitely had those vibes. When one thinks about the Mana series, chances are Secret of Mana will come to mind. That is the best in the franchise without a doubt so that response is natural. While Legend of Mana was certainly a beautiful game on PS1, it was dated by comparison to a lot of games out in for North America.
Sprite based games were old hat especially with the PS2 so close. Not to mention the rather confusing mechanics. The sequel to the classic Super Nintendo RPG, Chrono Cross expanded the franchise to alternate universes, adopted a turn-based combat system, and had dozens of playable characters.
A turn-based tactics RPG, set in the near future where giant mecha fight alongside or against tanks and troops. This game stars Chocobo and several other characters from the Final Fantasy universe in a kart racing adventure.
Unlock sidequests and save the world in Square's follow up to Secret of Mana. Squall and his band of mercenaries fight to save their world from conquest and destruction in the eighth numbered Final Fantasy title. It introduced several new concepts to the franchise, including a subplot with an alternate main character, level-scaling enemies and the Junction system. Another Mind is an adventure game created by Square for the PlayStation.
After being summoned to another world, the brash young swordsman Musashi embarks on a quest to save the peaceful Allucaneet Kingdom from the evil Thirstquencher Empire.
This edit will also create new pages on Giant Bomb for:. Until you earn points all your submissions need to be vetted by other Giant Bomb users. After multiple games based on cyberpunk or general futurism, Final Fantasy IX brings us back to the medieval feel of something like Final Fantasy V.
The game takes place on Gaia in the Mist Continent and starts out with the player in control of Zidane, leader of the group Tantalus.
After Zidane kidnaps the Princess of Alexandria, he winds up on a journey that teaches him about his own origins. It was easily the most beautiful Final Fantasy on the original PlayStation and served as the perfect swan song for the system. The game is incredibly ambitious, featuring a playable cast of dozens across two parallel dimensions that the player goes back and forth between to recruit party members and continue the story.
The game aimed to do so much, they had to scale it back—meaning even despite all the content in the game, much of it was pruned away. A major achievement for the company outside of the Final Fantasy franchise, Chrono Cross should be up for a remake of its own one day. His focus is primarily on spreading the word on obscure anime, comic books, and games whenever possible.
